1st, the conclusion: The average site gets 21% of their site traffic from referring sites. Once you exclude email, which Google Analytics includes in referring sites, the percentage of referring site traffic from the top social media sites is an astonishing 54%, or 9.6% of their overall site traffic.

But in the digital era, one aspect of influence mapping is now possible: living persons who are digitally connected to other living persons can now be graphed based on their interactions. And this has the social media world and brand marketers in particular falling over each other to figure out how to make the most use of this data. We just returned from SXSWi, where we were able to participate in many of the discussions on social media for brands and causes. There were plenty of brand reps, agencies, consultants and vendors in the crowds and on the panels- and wide ranging topics from ROI to Influence to Risk Avoidance. We saw some very interesting technologies and visualizations, and some of the panelists had good insights, but the overall impression we left with was that most participants had no hard numbers, no clear path forward, and that everyone was just trying to figure it all out.
